KIM

On April 29, 1998 I interviewed Kim. She was working a block of Eutaw Place a couple of blocks south of North Avenue.

Carl: how much do you make a day on the streets ŅdatingÓ?

Kim: On a good night maybe 50. I got some good regular dates that really go for me.

Kim: Yeah. One of my regular dates, when I really got to know him and when he started really keeping on coming back, said, Ņwho taught you how to give head, girl?Ó  He made me laugh.

Carl: You like your job?

Kim: What job? This job? ItÕs all right from time to time.

Kim: I donÕt dislike it no, no. Guys do make me mad sometimes. ThatÕs ordinary.

Carl: Would you quit it and go back to nurseÕs aid?

Kim: Yes, I love nursing; it runs in my family. My mother is a private duty nurse. My father teaches, at a College. He just retired from being a principal at a High School. I come from a good background family. ItÕs just that I went the wrong way and my father blames himself. He doesnÕt know what I do, but he blames himself he thinks he made a mistake in raising me some kind of way. He just feels so bad and I told him ŅDonÕt feel bad dad itÕs not your fault itÕs me.Ó I love him. (Sobbing) I love my father to death.

Carl: Why did you make that choice? Do you know why?

Kim: (sobbing)ÉdidnÕt nobody make me do this at all. I just went the wrong way and I want to stop. Believe me I want to stop. This is not what I want to do, you know, with the rest of my life. I love nursing. But I know I might have to go back to school to get certified. You know, cause its hard really to get a job now doing anything Š right or wrong? So, I am going to have to go back to school and stuff. My daughterÕs Godfather, as a matter of fact, that man is so good to me. He is good to my daughter. I met him down at the El Dorado. He works at the Pepsi Cola Company. I was in love with him. I wasnÕt deeply in love, IÕd say I cared for him and he loved me. But maybe I couldnÕt get over my kidÕs father. I still think about him from time to time. He works for the city. HeÕll come past my house ring the doorbell and weÕll talk for a few.

Carl: What do you think your future is going to be?

Kim: Um (tape ends)
